Human Right advocate and private legal practitioner Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has cautioned Prof Gyampo and the University of Ghana, UTAG to desist from their strike action which has nothing to do with galamsey activities.
The astute Lawyer strongly believes that Professor Gyampo and the UTAG has no case to put down their tools and leave the lecture hall for such a superfluous demonstration against the controversial galamsey, currently going on in the country.
“If you have the the balls, go to strike, if you breach the contract I will let the student sue you. You will go to strike we will not pay you. You can go to strike , do we care?” Lawyer Ampaw lamented.
As cited in the Citi News room, the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG) has announced its intention to proceed with a planned strike, despite Organised Labour’s decision to call off its nationwide strike against the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis.
The UG-UTAG strike, originally scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024, is in response to what the association perceives as the government’s insufficient action to address the ongoing galamsey menace.
Organised Labour, during a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, stated that the government had shown efforts towards combating illegal mining, which led to their decision to suspend the strike. However, UG-UTAG remains unconvinced.
Speaking to journalists following the Organised Labour announcement, President of UG-UTAG, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, underscored the seriousness of the situation and affirmed the association’s commitment to taking a strong stand on the issue.
He expressed frustration, claiming that UG-UTAG’s views were suppressed during the decision-making process by Organised Labour.
Prof. Gyampo emphasized that despite the broader labour group’s decision, UG-UTAG felt compelled to act independently, given the urgency of the illegal mining crisis and its detrimental impact on the country’s environment and future.
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw cannot fathom why the UTAG-UG chapter should sanction a strike action against galamsey, and solemnly see such an action as being politically motivated and a clear agenda of Prof Gyampo to make the government unpopular.
He is therefore calling on the government to import lectures overseas including Nigeria , where he believes can supply more of the lecturers to come and play their trade in our universities in Ghana. I will call on a demonstration to harass the lecturers.
Time will tell whether Prof Gyampo and the UG-UTAG will heed the call to rescind their decision from going on strike.
