Ghanaian gospel musician Nicholas Omane Acheampong has revealed that he was a sponge seller before he started his music career when someone recommended the late Kwadwo Akwaboah to him.
The Gospel musician made this known on Plan B FM’s family, lifestyle, and relationship show dubbed NYANSAPO FIE hosted by Rev. Dr. Michael Asenso. The veteran artist is billed to perform at the maiden edition of Plan B FM Aseda Gospel show slated for Friday 1st December 2023 at the first baptist church Tema community 5.
“When I started my music career, I wanted a talented sound engineer who would understand the kind of music I do and he has been a blessing since he came into my life. I benefited a lot from him,” he stated.
Nicholas said Kwadwo Akwaboah was a disciplinarian and as a result, some musicians could not work with him.
“The man I know will not do any shoddy work because of what he stood for. Some musicians could not work with him because of how principled he was. If a song is bad, he will not record it no matter what.
“After helping me to record my first album of six tracks, I couldn’t pay all the bills because the I made from my sponge business was not enough to pay kwadwo Akwaboah, so it remained Ghs 30,000 then but now Ghs 3 but gave me the album and said, you have not to pay all the cost but take your album and go but bring the remaining cost if you get it, I thanked him and left but by God’s grace I make good sales and went back to him and pay the remaining debt I owe him and he was glad that I came back to pay him because other musicians he has helped earlier did not fulfill their promise after recording their songs for them”
He said that he was able to buy a second-hand vehicle from the money he made from the cassette and used it to sell more of his cassette “After buying the vehicle I stopped selling the sponges and concentrated more on selling the cassette with his cuson and relocated to Madina where I met my God sent helper, on one faithful day I was the house when someone rushed to me that, they need a vehicle to sent their collapsed relative to the hospital, so I quick took them to the hospital without a charge because we were all in the same neighborhood but a gentleman from the family I helped came to me trying to dash me something but I declined because we weren’t trained to accept anything when we helped people,
Not knowing the gentleman had just returned from overseas, he did some investigation about me and got to know that I am a musician, so he came back to me and said he would help me and that was the secret of my first trip abroad and the breakthrough of my music career” he added
He explained that Kwadwo Akwaboah “recorded all my hit songs from Aporsor, Zaphnath Paneah, Tabitha Kum, and Mahashala among others and he also played a major role on all my albums. He would go through all the songs with me to make sure I got everything right.
