A Political Analyst, Jonathan Asante Otchere says, he does not expect the president, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo to assent to the passage of the e-levy
Speaking on Simpieso today, March 29, he said, that will amount to an insult to the constitution and the ruling of the Supreme court in the case of Justice Abdullai against the court
Mr Otchere said, “when judgements on ruling come out at a point of clearing a political mischief without considering the future consequence, it then becomes a politically motivated driven judgement and that is where the problem lies”
“From Article 104(1), it has been ruled that you must have a different voting and debate quorum, if so then it stands to reason that the NPP in government didn’t have the number” he added
In an interview with the host, Emmanuel Martey, Alaska De Don, he stated that there is evidence to the contrary that there is a problem with quorum
“My position is that Supreme Court should be the Apex and needs to be careful with the kind of rulings brought into the public domain”
His comments follows the passage of the e-levy bill in the absence of the minority MPs who walked out before the bill was considered at the second reading stage
The Minority had complained that, it had been taken by surprise by the unexpected consideration of the e-levy because it was not listed in parliament’s business for this week
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin said, he was surprised by the minority walk out but indicated that would not affect the course of proceedings
The levy which was amended from 1.75% to 1.5% today, Tuesday March 29, 2022 will be a tax on electronic transaction including mobile money transactions
