Public Health Nurses, Francisca Agyere and Patience Quartey with Tema Health Directorate have advised Ghanaians to guard against unprotected sex to minimize the spread of HIV.
According them, statistics show that 346,120 people are living with HIV infections in Ghana. With 34% being male and 64% female
Speaking on Plan B FM ‘Apomuden Fie’ with Bismark Opoku, they expressed discomfort at the rapid spread of HIV and called for concerted efforts for intensified HIV/AIDS education in the country.
The Public Health Nurses further attributed the situation to an increase in high-risk sexual behaviour by the youth and multiple sex partners.
They also observed that the fear and consciousness surrounding HIV and AIDS had dwindled as a result of reduced health promotion activities focusing on HIV and AIDS coupled with the lack of information and education on the collective status of the population.
“Having been in existence for long, it has created a sense of acceptance to the extent that the youth now fear even pregnancy more than HIV and AIDS”.
Mrs. Francisca Agyere reiterated that HIV and AIDS was real and encouraged the youth to abstain from sex or get the needed protection by using a condom, and being faithful to one’s partner.
She advised barbering saloons and others who used equipment to do proper sanitization.
