The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed Thursday morning’s widespread power outage in parts of the country to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, GRIDCo said the fault occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. and triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants.
According to the company, the automatic shutdown was part of the power system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS). The incident, however, resulted in the loss of power supply to some parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, immediately took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and began the safe and systematic restoration of the power system.
The company said power supply had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts were continuing to reconnect all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and assured the public that all relevant technical teams have been fully mobilised to complete the restoration process.
The company said it would continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as restoration efforts continue.
