Samuel Amoahh, Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has distanced the union from any recent announcement regarding an increase in transport fares. Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem morning show, he stated categorically that the GPRTU has not been involved in any such decision.
According to him, both the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and GPRTU usually work collaboratively in matters concerning fare adjustments. “Anytime there is the need to increase or reduce fares, the GPRTU and GRTCC come together, draft proposals, and submit them to the Ministry for approval. Once agreed upon, both parties sign and then we implement,” he clarified.
However, in the case of the recent fare hike, Amoahh emphasized that GPRTU was not consulted. While acknowledging that the reasons cited by GRTCC—such as deteriorating roads and the imposition of new taxes on fuel—are valid concerns affecting drivers nationwide, he stressed that fare adjustments should never be made unilaterally.
“As two separate bodies, we must always come together to make these decisions. It cannot be a one-party move,” he concluded.
