GPL: Referees earn GH₵1,000 per match – RAG Chairman

GPL: Referees earn GH₵1,000 per match – RAG Chairman

George Saijah, chairman of the Referees Association of Ghana, has revealed that referees officiating in the Ghana Premier League earn GH₵1,000 per match.

This disclosure comes in response to concerns that referees might feel compelled to favour certain clubs due to inadequate pay.

During a probe into a petition by the Save Ghana Football Forum, Saijah explained the pay structure for officials in the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, and Women’s League. He clarified that the GH₵ 1,000 covers transportation, officiating fees, hotel accommodation, and meals.

“[The salary] is a take-home of GH₵1,000 cedis for Premier League referees. The Division One League and the referees in the Women’s League receive 750 cedis,” he said, emphasizing that the amount includes all related expenses.

“The GH₵1,000 cedis comprise of their transportation, officiating, hotel, and food.”

Despite this, a simple breakdown of a referee’s expenses for a single game suggests that their out-of-pocket costs may exceed the provided compensation.
