Mawuli Wayo climbed off the bench to inspire Hearts of Oak to a comeback victory after scoring a brace in the final ten minutes to beat Accra Lions 3-2 at the WAFA Park in Sogakope.
Accra Lions had taken a second half lead after Lucky Nwafor and Ezekiel Alladoh netted to cancel Mohammed Hussein’s first half strike for the former champions.
However, Wayo’s introduction moments after Lions’ lead sparked a strong fight back from the visitors.
The host came close to opening the scoring early in the game after Tetteh Narh met a cross from Edmund Amakye but the Phobians replied with a cross from Saani Mohammed meeting Ahmed Ramzy’s head.
Kwabena Boateng fired from the edge of the box moments later but Daniel Afful of Accra Lions was equal to the task during an end-to-end period between the two sides.
Nine minutes before the break, the visitors broke the deadlock after an unmarked Hussein met a cross from the right from Saani Mohammed.
Accra Lions came back from the break eager for an equaliser and it did not take long for them to respond after Amakye hustled a Hearts player to win the ball and serve forward Nwafor who bullied his way into the box and slotted home home for the host.
A minute later Abdul Shakun sent in a cross which failed to meet its intended target and soon afterwards coach Ibrahim Tanko brought on Blessing Dankwa and Alladoh. The substitution reaped an immediate result after Lions won a midfield tussle before Tetteh Narh was sent through, with the midfielder rounding up the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper to serve Alladoh for the lead in the 73rd minutes.
Hearts coach Aboubakar Ouattara brought on Wayo in the final 15 minutes. Five minutes after his introduction, the ex-King Faisal star fired from distance to beat Afful.
Two minutes later, Wayo won the ball of Lions defender Issah Mohammed before header over Afful for the match winner.
