Hearts of Oak missed the chance to make significant gains in the Ghana Premier League title race after being held to a 0-0 draw by a disciplined Bechem United side at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With rivals above them dropping points, the Phobians came into the contest under pressure to deliver, and they showed early intent. An Abdul Aziz Afranie header crashing against the post inside five minutes set the tone for a dominant Hearts display, but fortune and resilience were not on their side.
Hearts controlled large spells of the game, dictating the tempo through Mawuli Wayo and Baba Adamu, while captain Oppong Afrane marshalled the defence with authority. Despite the sustained pressure, Bechem United remained compact and patient, limiting clear-cut chances and relying on quick counters that were safely handled by goalkeeper Ali Agbasi.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Hearts throwing men forward in search of a decisive moment. Henry Boateng came close with an ambitious overhead kick, while late substitutions added urgency to the Phobians’ attack. However, Bechem’s defensive organisation held firm, and a crucial late intervention denied substitute Asmah what would have been a dramatic winner.
The draw keeps Hearts of Oak in fourth place on 36 points, level with Bibiani Gold Stars and Aduana FC, but crucially ahead of arch-rivals Asante Kotoko going into the much-anticipated Super Clash. For Bechem United, the point away from home lifts them to 26 points, maintaining a healthy cushion above the relegation zone and underlining their growing resilience on the road.
