Richard Yaw Aning, NPP Communication Team Member for Tema Central Constituency, has issued a strong call for the Interior Minister to clamp down on black marketers, particularly foreigners, in addition to addressing the issue of street children, in order to protect Ghana’s reputation and stabilise the cedi.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkɔsoɔnsɛm show with host Obideyɛ Kofi Sekyi, Aning lauded the Ghana Immigration Service for their efforts in tackling street children but insisted that black marketers, especially in Tema, must be dealt with decisively to bolster the local currency and restore economic order.
Aning emphasized that the activities of black marketers not only undermine the economy but also tarnish Ghana’s image in the eyes of foreign investors and visitors. He urged the government to take a firm stance against these individuals to promote a stable and thriving economy.
However, in a differing perspective, Anthony Sam-Anoom, Assemblyman for Republic Electoral Area and NDC Communication Team Member for the Tema Central Constituency, while supporting the Interior Minister’s initiative, stressed the need for sustainability.
He noted that the Ghana Immigration Service’s efforts to clamp down on street children and deport them should be complemented by measures to prevent their return. Sam-Anoom also highlighted the efforts of Hon. Charles Amos, Assemblyman for Padmore Electoral Area, who had embarked on a similar initiative in the metropolis through the Tema Metropolitan Assembly’s Social Services.
Sam-Anoom expressed concerns that without proper follow-up, the deported individuals might return to the streets, and appealed to the GIS to remain vigilant to prevent this.
