Gonja And Lobis’ War In Mahama’s Backyard Escalates; Several Feared Dead

Tensions have escalated in President John Dramani Mahama’s hometown of Bole in the Savannah Region, where violent clashes between Gonjas and Lobis have left several people feared dead.

The renewed conflict, which stems from unresolved chieftaincy disputes, has plunged the area into insecurity, forcing many residents to flee for safety.

In response to the violence, the Minister for the Interior, acting on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Bole Township and its environs.

The curfew, which runs from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., took effect on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, and will remain in force until further notice.

“The measure is necessary to safeguard lives and property in the area and to prevent further escalation of the conflict,” the Ministry stated.

The government has appealed to traditional leaders and residents to prioritise peace and avoid retaliation.

“We continue to urge chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth, and the people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace,” the statement added.

Security personnel have been deployed to maintain order and to enforce the curfew.

Meanwhile, residents have expressed fear over the worsening situation, calling for lasting solutions.

“We cannot continue to live in fear every time disputes arise. Government and our traditional authorities must come together to resolve this once and for all,” a resident lamented.

The clashes mark one of the most violent outbreaks in the area in recent years.
