Ghanaians Must Via Consensus, Advocacy Or Demonstration Stop The Ex-Gratia Norm- CDD

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli state, Togbe Afede XIV has explained his rejection of over GH¢365,000 ex-gratia paid him for serving on the Council of State between 2017 and 2020.

He said he finds it inappropriate to receive the said amount when he already took monthly salaries for serving on the Council.
Togbe Afede XIV in a statement said, “I did not think the payment was made to trap me, as is being speculated. I believe it was paid to everybody who served on the Council of State.

However, I thought that extra payment was inappropriate for a short, effectively part-time work, for which I received a monthly salary and was entitled to other privileges.”
“So, I was very uncomfortable with it,” he added.

In authority of this Bohyeba Afriyie of Plan B Fm had interviewed Kwabena Mensah Aborampah senior Programs Officer for the Center For Democratic Development and here is what he had to say about Togbe Afede’s rejection of the ex-gratia paid to him.

Paul Aborampah Mensah commended Torgbui Afede for the move and urged others beneficiaries to emulate him.

He stated that the bold step taken by Togbe baffles him a lot but the rejection of ex gratia does not surprise him because it is the right thing most of our leaders must practice but for the fact that no one has got the good heart and courage to do that and Togbe did baffles him a lot because to be the first to do something takes a lot of courage to implement.

He also said that CDD has been calling for this for long and finally somebody’s action proved them right.

He concluded that for such a norm to be stopped “It could be triggered by consensus, advocacy, demand demonstrations, petitions from citizens, you see policy development is taken from different angles. It is taken from research data, it’s taken by consensus, appeals and taken by so many forms.
