A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Council of Elders, Robert Ajene, has attributed the party’s devastating defeat in the 2024 general elections to the leadership class of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM, Mr. Ajene criticized Akufo-Addo for failing to listen to advice and address concerns raised by members of his own party.
He specifically highlighted the President’s refusal to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister despite widespread calls from party members and citizens alike.
“Our former president, Nana Akufo-Addo, did not respect the views of all Ghanaians when it came to certain issues affecting the welfare of the people.
“You wouldn’t listen to people; even your insiders say this particular person is not good. Move him, you refused,” Mr. Ajene remarked.
He further argued that the NPP’s defeat was not due to a rejection of the party members but public dissatisfaction with Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
“Ghanaians don’t hate the NPP. Ghanaians didn’t like the leadership of the NPP,” Ajene stated, emphasizing that many voters associated the party’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with the former president.
While Mr. Ajene praised Dr. Bawumia as a capable leader, he suggested that his loss was tied to his close association with Akufo-Addo.
“Ghanaians were happy that they had a leader that had come by destiny in the person of Dr. Mahamudu, but they thought by mistake, ‘he was so attached to Akufo-Addo to the extent that a vote for Bawumia, you are voting for Akufo-Addo. That’s the mistake,” he emphasized.
