As the country celebrate today, Friday, December 7, 2022 as its Constitution Day, several Ghanaians especially listeners of Tema Community base radio station, Plan-B FM have called for amendment of the country’s constitution stating that some portion of it currently are not fit for purpose.
Constitution Day of Ghana is observed on every 7th January and it is to commemorate the establishment of a new constitution for the fourth republic of Ghana in January 1993, popularly referred to as the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
Responding to a question posed by Maxwell Ohene Addo, the host of Nkosuo Nsem, a Plan-B FM flagship morning show on what their views are on the country’s constitution and areas they would want amended, most of the callers called for amendment of the 1992 constitution adding that some portions of it are irrelevant currently.
According to some of them if left to be in its current state, most portions of it will only benefit a few especially persons in government. They have therefore appealed that the whole constitution in its entirety should be looked at again.
One of the listeners of the programme, Kofi Boakye who phoned from Koforidua called to say that the constitution should be amended to prevent persons in government and leaders of the country from seeking medical treatment from abroad. He also called for ban on same people from sending their children to school in foreign countries.
Explaining his reason for such demand, Kofi noted that the continued practice where such persons are allowed to seek medical treatment from abroad or send their children abroad for education will continue to deny Ghana improvement in the two aforementioned sectors.
For his part, Agya Nimo, another caller was of the view that the amendment is overdue and called for a holistic review of the constitution adding that at the time it was brought into effect, the country was not in this state. According to him it is out of place to still maintain the constitution especially when a lot has changed.
Another caller, Agya Owusu, it would be difficult to get it amended because the very people who could make it possible are the same people who benefit from it heavily. “I am not sure this will happen because we all know the very people who enjoy what is contained in there. I do not see them accepting this,” he remarked.
Other callers who also called share the same view as the initial callers. According to them it would do the country good if the constitution is amended so as to suit Ghanaians.
What is clear is the fact that almost all the callers expressed their views with a call for Ghana’s constitution to be amended.
