Selorm Avedetsi, NDC Communication Team member for Ningo Prampram Constituency, has called for proactive disciplinary measures to curb unruly behaviour in schools.
In an interview with Obidehyɛ Kofi Sekyi on Plan B FM’s ‘Nkɔsoɔnsɛm’, Avedetsi urged policymakers to be proactive rather than reactive in engaging schools.
“Our schools have turned into recreational centres, leaving students with ample time for unwanted activities,” he stated.
Avedetsi advocated for extracurricular activities, including STEM education, to focus students on healthy competitions and innovations, thereby discouraging them from engaging in harmful activities.
King Etse, NDC Communication Team Member for Kpone Katamanso Constituency, criticised school heads and teachers for failing to instil godly character in students. Instead, he accused them of focusing on activities that promote indiscipline, such as demanding money from students during worship sessions.
“Students should be thoroughly searched before entering campuses, but nowadays schools demand cutlasses and hoes from students, which can be used to act in an undisciplined manner,” he noted.
King Etse further lamented the state of indiscipline in schools, stating, “The mission school era did not see what we are seeing today, hence the need for a total overhaul of our education system.”
Both Avedetsi’s and King Etse’s comments highlight the need for reform in Ghana’s education sector to promote discipline and responsible behaviour among students.
