Ghana pulls out of hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships

Ghana pulls out of hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships

Ghana has officially withdrawn from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships, citing governance challenges and lack of institutional support.

In a statement issued on March 26, the Ghana Swimming Association confirmed that the decision was taken as a last resort after efforts to secure the necessary backing from key stakeholders proved unsuccessful.

The championships, which were scheduled to take place in Accra from May 5 to May 10, 2026, had been awarded to Ghana during the continental event held in Cairo in April 2025 and later confirmed by the African Aquatics Bureau.

According to the Association, preparations for the event were severely affected by ongoing internal governance disputes, including the disruption of its Elective Congress in October 2025 by national security personnel.

The situation was further complicated by the National Sports Authority, which withdrew its recognition of the Association and raised concerns about unresolved electoral issues.

Despite attempts to resolve the impasse through a tripartite meeting involving the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Authority, and aggrieved parties, progress stalled. A key setback was the failure to inaugurate a Local Organising Committee (LOC), even with less than six weeks remaining before the competition.

The Ghana Swimming Association also revealed that over 43 countries had already confirmed participation, with many making travel arrangements before the withdrawal decision was announced.

The withdrawal could have serious implications for Ghana, including a potential fine of at least $100,000 and the risk of being barred from future international swimming competitions if the penalty is not settled.

It also raises concerns about the country’s credibility as a host of international sporting events and the future use of facilities such as the Borteyman Aquatic Centre.

The Association expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to participating nations, athletes, and stakeholders, while reaffirming its commitment to resolving internal challenges and rebuilding confidence in the administration of swimming in Ghana.
