Ghana Education Service Announces Changes to School Selection Process for BECE Candidates

2021 BECE Begins Today With Over 571,0000 Candidates In Ghana

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced significant changes to the school selection process for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. Speaking on the “Ebanosen” show on Plan B 104.5 FM, Miss Mavis Akutu, PRO for GES in the Tema West Municipality, urged parents, teachers, headteachers, and students to exercise caution when selecting schools.

Candidates can now select only 7 schools, down from 9 in previous years. Category A schools, which are highly attended schools, are limited to 1 selection per candidate. This is to ensure that candidates have a fair chance of securing admission to these popular schools.

In addition, Category B schools allow 2 selections, with options for day or boarding schools. Category C schools permit 2 selections as well, with 1 day school and 1 boarding school. Furthermore, Category D schools offer 2 additional selections, encompassing all three categories. These changes provide candidates with a range of options to choose from, depending on their preferences and needs.

It is essential for parents and headteachers to endorse school selections before submission. This ensures that candidates have made informed decisions and have the support of their parents and educators. Headteachers should also retain a copy of the selected schools for their records. Moreover, candidates must indicate their residential status and chosen program when selecting schools. This information is crucial in determining school placement.

The GES emphasized that school placement is based on merit, with grades determining selection outcomes. Candidates who fail to secure a school placement may have received a grade 9 in English or mathematics. This underscores the importance of academic performance in securing admission to desired schools.

The BECE is scheduled to take place from June 11th to June 18th. Candidates, parents, and educators are advised to carefully review the new guidelines to ensure a smooth school selection process.
