The Informed Teachers Network (ITN) has petitioned the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate alleged corruption in Yeji Sec Tech in excess of GHS240,000.
Per the petition signed by Mr. Jerry Akprhor, Founder & Lead Educator of Informed Teachers Network, the headteacher and some teachers under his leadership were engaged in the collection of unapproved fees (corruption and extortion) of money from the school’s WASSCE 2021 candidates to be used to motivate final year students.
“It has come to our attention that the headmaster of the school in agreement with some selected teachers (potential invigilators) connived and allegedly charged the final year (2021 Form Three) students an amount of GH300.00 each as motivation fee ahead of 2021 WASSCE.”
The petition indicated that the said amount was paid into the head teacher’s personal account by over 800 final-year students of the school. This amounts to not less than GHS240,000 (800 students x GHS300.00).
Although the Yeji Sec Tech school is a public second cycle school, the petitioners indicated information available to them shows that, the Headmaster is running the school as though it was a remedial school and that, he charges around GHS1500 to admit bad registered failed SHS graduates who wish to rewrite WASSCE. In the same way, the school is said to be charging to admit students placed by CSSPS in the school for admission.” The statement added.
“It is however worrying to note that a teacher at the Yeji SH/TECH School who complained about the GHC300 extortion from final year students was reported to the Director and was unjustifiably transferred to one Junior High School by the Pru East District Education Directorate.”
Confirmation of teacher being transferred for questioning acts of extortion
In a related development, Ghanaeducation.org is reliably informed that the teacher, Mr. Adams Emmanuel who challenged the charging of unapproved fees, acts of extortion, corruption, and unprofessional conduct of the headteacher and colleague teachers has been transferred from the Yeji Senior High Technical for demanding answers and accountability.
In an interview with the teacher who has since 4th January been transferred to Komkoma D/A as a class teacher, he confirmed his transfer but added that he could not ascertain the content of the letter from his headteacher to the GES Pru East District which led to his transfer.
The Yeji Secondary Technical was among 11 Senior High Schools who had a problem with WAEC, which led to their English language result being withheld but later released.
Investigate alleged GHS240K corruption/ extortion in Yeji Sec Tech
The petitioners have therefore called on the GES to “as a matter of urgency investigate this rot and bring some sanity into the school and also to serve as a deterrent to others who might be perpetrating similar acts or considering the same.
The managers of the GES at the Head Office in Accra and the GES Council must take up this matter to ensure teachers with high moral ethics who stand for the truth and fight for what is right do not get victimized and ganged against by persons in authority. The call by the Informed Teachers Network (ITN) for an immediate investigation of the allegations must not be watered down by the GES and the GES council.
