The National Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Bernard Owusu has stated that, organized labour will hit harder should the government fails to act on their demands against the fight against illegal mining popularly known as ‘galamsey’.
Mr. Owusu emphasised that, illegal mining menace (galamsey) poses an existential threat to Ghana’s environment and Public health.
The time for hyperbole is passed, TUC argued that urgent and consistent action is needed right now.
“Exposure to hazardous chemicals causes communities close to mining sites to suffer from higher incidence of respiratory diseases, skin conditions and other health related issues” he warned.
Mr. Owusu expressed that, until there is support for sustainable mining practices, they have insisted on an instant stop of illegal mining operations in Ghana.
“Ghanaians have entrusted our destiny into the hands of current leadership so what is good for the Citizenry is what the government must do. We demand amendment of instrument 2023 EI 234 to be applied by the government else, we will hit harder” he added.
