The Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders has sent a strong signal that it will embark on a massive demonstration if the Ghana Shipper’s Authority does not stop shipping lines from increasing port charges at the Tema port.
According to them, Shipping companies have been charging exorbitant fees at the port for imported and exported goods and they want the shipping lines to end the excessive charges.
The President of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, Mr. Edward Akrong in an interview with Ohene Addo on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ said the killer charges further compounds the problems they are already facing.
“We are calling on the government to take action against some shipping lines that have increased administrative fees and charges on imported and exported goods. We are paying for port security charge, container security charge, carrier security fee and other additional charges”
“We are being charged for their own technical issues which caused the breakdown of their system and their demurrage charges are too much. We use to pay $4,000 per container, but now we are paying as high as $15,000 per container which we think is just too much.
“We are pleading with the government, and other bodies concerned to do something to put an end to all the unnecessary charges at the shipping lines else we will advise ourselves, either embarking on a massive demonstration or the law court. We are being taken advantage of by the shipping lines”
