Former majority leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) under the former President John Agyekum Kuffuor led-government, Lawyer Abraham Osei Aidoo, has lauded the idea of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo scrapping off some ministries while merging some other ministries.
Speaking to Maxwell Ohene Addo, host of Nkosuo Nsem, a Plan-B FM flagship morning show, Lawyer noted that that the president would not be doing anything wrong if he scrap some of the existing ministries. Merging some other ministries, according to him would also not be bad idea as it will go a long way to reduce the number of ministries.
Continuing he noted that the Akufo-Addo led government could still govern the country with less number of ministries as compared to what it did during its first term in office. He adds that the idea of merging some ministries into one could be described as a fine idea.
Responding a question posed by the host of the show on what could have been the reason for the scrapping of some of the ministries as well as merging others, Lawyer Aidoo pointed out that it could be that the president might have felt that some of the ministries have achieved the purpose for which they were created hence the decision to scrap.
He continued that the decision to merge other ministries could also have been the fact that the president felt merging some of them would enhance governance under his leadership. He was optimistic Ghanaians will sooner than later realize that the decision by govern to prune down on the number of ministries is in their best interest and urged them to be positive minded about it.
Another reason he mentioned which could be behind the president’s decision to scrap some of these ministries as well as merge some of the ministries, could be as a result of complaints from Ghanaians on the size of minsters the president has appointed during his first term.
Touching on lobbying and when new ministers are likely to be announced, the former majority Leader noted that it would be difficult for him as an individual to determine when that will happen and added that these are tense period with a lot of speculations especially in the media with a lot of names flying as potential ministers for some of these ministries that may be merged or new ministries that may be created.
A section of the media report that some seven ministries created by President Nana Addo Damkwa Akufo-Addo during his first term in office were likely to be scrapped when he announces his new set of Ministers and their Ministries in the coming days.
The Ministries, according to the report include Procurement headed by Sarah Adwoa Sarfo, Planning headed by Professor Gyan Baffour, Special Development Initiative led by Madam Hawa Koomson and Aviation which had Joseph Kofi Adda as Minister.
The rest are Monitoring and Evaluation headed by Dr. Anthony Osei Akoto, Inner Cities and Zongo Development supervised by Dr. Mustapha Hamid and Business Development led by Dr. Awal Mohammed.
What is left to be seen is when the president will announce his new ministers and which ministries would be scrapped.
