A fire outbreak at the Tema timber market has left many shop owners distressed.

The Ghana National Fire Service deployed about four fire tenders to douse the fire, which started around 11 am on Wednesday.

According to an affected shop owner, Godfred Kpemetey, the fire began at the home of some squatters who live behind the market.

“The fire started about 45 minutes to an hour ago, but the fire service wasn’t here on time,” an eyewitness said.

He also said the fire was also spreading to where they keep wood.

“Our machine shops are on fire. Our woods are also on fire.”

Meanwhile, fire personnel have been able to bring the fire under control.

“The fire started from wooden sheds used as dwelling places and spread to some parts of the timber market. The fire is currently contained, and rigorous fire fighting continues,” the Ghana National Fire Service announced on its Facebook Page.
