Father of assaulted Obrachire student speaks on son’s recovery

Obrachire SHS student demands justice after brutal assault at inter-schools sports event

Speaking calmly but with clear pain, the father said his son has not been the same since that day. He explained that healing has not been easy, even as time passes. “My son is not the same boy I knew,” he said. “He is fighting to heal, not just his body, but his mind.”

The assault, according to the family, happened after a disagreement between students. It quickly grew into a serious attack. Videos and photos from the scene later spread on social media, causing many people to react with anger and sadness. For the father, seeing those images brought fresh pain. “I couldn’t sleep when I saw the video,” he said. “That is my child on the ground. People were watching. Some were even cheering. As a parent, it breaks you.”

Since returning home, the student has become quiet and distant. The father said his son now avoids noise and crowds. He struggles to sleep and sometimes wakes up at night confused and afraid. Doctors have told the family that while the visible injuries are getting better, the mental pain remains deep. “He asks me why they did that to him,” the father added quietly. “I don’t always have an answer.”

The family has reported the matter to both the police and school leaders. They say they want a full investigation and clear action against those involved. The father stressed that the family is not seeking revenge. He said their aim is to protect other students. “This could be anyone’s son,” he said. “If we stay quiet, it will happen again.”

At Obrachire Senior High School, the incident has caused worry and fear among students. Some classmates have visited the injured student at home, while others have sent messages of support. Teachers are also said to be troubled by what happened and are discussing ways to prevent such violence.

People in Agona Swedru who saw the situation after the assault said the mood was tense. Many could not believe that a school event could end in such harm. Education workers and parents are now calling for better control and safety during inter-school activities.

At home, the family is taking each day slowly. Therapy sessions have started, and the father says progress comes in small steps. There are moments of sadness, but also moments of hope. “Sometimes he smiles,” the father said. “Those moments give us hope.”
