Famous US-based Ghanaian Author, Economist, George Ayittey Dead

Ghanaian author, lecturer and top Economist who founded the Free Africa Foundation in the United States, George Ayittey has passed on at the age of 77, MyNewsGh.com reports.

While details of his death has been sketchy, a private funeral is ongoing for him today, 8th April 2022 at Everly-Wheately Funeral Home 1500 West Bradock Rd in the United States where he has lived for most of his life as an academic.

He will be buried at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 South Kings Highway Alexandria, VA. 22306 in the US State of Virginia.

He was a former professor at American University, and an associate scholar at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in the US.

Born 13 October 1945, the Ghanaian economist was a regular international media panelist and pundit on African affairs for so many years. 

Late Ayittey held a B.Sc. in economics from the University of Ghana, Legon, an M.A. from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba.

He taught at Wayne State College and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania also holding a National Fellowship at the Hoover Institution in 1988–89, and then joined The Heritage Foundation as a Bradley Resident Scholar.

George Ayittey founded The Free Africa Foundation in 1993, to serve as a catalyst for reform in Africa.

In 2008, Ayittey was listed by Foreign Policy as one of the “Top 100 Public Intellectuals” who “are shaping the tenor of our time”.
