Dr Kwasi Koranteng, a medical officer and public health advocate at the Tema General Hospital has admonished Ghanaians to engage in healthy lifestyle and regular physical excerise to help reduce the prevalence of stroke in the country.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Health show, Apomuden Fie, Dr Koranteng explained that remaining fit through physical activities can help fight a number of non-communicable diseases like stroke among other ailments within the body.

“A Healthy lifestyle is very important; I will urge everyone to be mindful of what they eat.”

“About 3% of our population suffer from stroke. Loss of blood supply or hemorrhage (bleeding) in the brain; People at risk for stroke include those with a high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and those who smoke.”

“People with heart rhythm disturbances, especially atrial fibrillation are also at risk”, he added

“Stroke can happen in two main ways: Something blocks the flow of blood, or something causes bleeding in the brain.’’

“When you have a stroke then your brain isn’t getting the blood it needs and this requires immediate medical attention to lower your chances of brain damage, disability, or even the unfortunate, death.”

“Sometimes stroke happens gradually, but you’re likely to have one or more sudden symptoms like numbness or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially on one side”, Dr Koranteng indicated.

The medical officer also entreated Ghanaians to have regular checkups. These according to Dr. Koranteng are crucial in the fight against stroke.

He also called for intensified public education on the importance of healthy lifestyles for preventive health and ensure all especially the youth, live longer with better health conditions.
