The Adenta Circuit Court has handed a 15-year prison sentence to 48-year-old excavator operator Kingsley Abdul Wahab Lawani for robbing a woman and her son at gunpoint in Lakeside, Accra.
Lawani was found guilty on five counts, including robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery, following a full trial.
Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban, prosecuting, told the court that the victims, a businesswoman residing at Lakeside Transformer and her son, were attacked by Lawani and two accomplices. One of the accomplices has since died, while the other remains at large.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on April 27, 2025, when the complainant and her son returned home in an unregistered Honda CRV. The suspects, armed with a pistol, confronted them, fired a warning shot, and stole their mobile phones and the vehicle’s ignition key.
The victims raised an alarm, alerting nearby residents, which led to Lawani’s immediate arrest at the scene. The firearm used in the robbery was also recovered.
During the attempted escape, accomplice Richard Opoku Adjei was injured and later died at the Police Hospital. Investigators recovered one empty cartridge and two live rounds from the scene.
Lawani admitted his involvement in the robbery during his caution statement, and the court subsequently convicted him, sentencing him to 15 years imprisonment.
