Paramount Chief for the Talensi Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Tongraan Kugbila Sung-Nalebtang says, the 1.75% that will be deducted from the e-levy is an insignificant amount that if given to anyone will not be appreciated in monetary terms.
He wonders why it will therefore be difficult and confusing for anyone to resist the passage of the levy since it is just a small contribution by all citizens towards nation-building.
The revered chief who was speaking in an interview with Bolgatanga based radio station Dreamz FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com also observed that the resistance of the levy is fueled by perceptions that need to be demystified in simple terms for the ordinary Ghanaian to understand since the levy will benefit successive governments.
Tongraan who is also a member of the Council of State, however, advised the finance minister to concentrate on explaining to Ghanaians the benefits and implications of the levy.
“…E-levy, for me it is an innovation that will benefit all parties that will come after the NPP in the sense that the 1.75% that is being said shouldn’t be confusing. I would have wished that the finance minister should be talking mathematically of what 1.75% means. It means that out of 100 cedis, your contribution is one cedi and fifty pesewas. That one cedi seventy-five pesewas which is your contribution to the government is money that as of now if you give that money to anybody on the road begging will not even thank you…” he posited.
He also added that, aside from the fact that it will reduce stress, the e-levy will avoid possible attacks by armed robbers in which instances victims are slapped and their belongings taken.
“…If you are sending money to your mother in the village, will it not be better to pay the 1.75% than carrying the money on you? Is it not better to do an electronic transfer than to earn a slap and still lose your money…? He questioned.
