Despite being one of the most important fishing countries in west Africa, Ghana’s fisheries sector is confronted with extraordinary challenges due to the activities of Miners and illegal fishing among fishermen themselves.
According to the Secretary of Ghana Tuna Association (GTA), Mr. Armaah Maah Fio who is also a Fisherman has chastised the exploitation of the of the fishing business by Artisanal and industrial fleet.
In an interview with Plan B FM, Armaah Fio pointed out that inland fishing contributions to the fishery sector had dropped significantly as a result of people mining in our water bodies.
“People normally say funding has been our biggest challenge, but there are environmental challenges”
“Inland contributions to our fishing sector have dropped drastically, because people are mining in our water bodies”, he said.
“When you go to the western Region, river ankobra is gone, people use to do fishing but now they’ve stopped and they have to depend on the sea for fish which has affected our contribution in the inland sector”
“All the major water bodies contributing to fishing is polluted because of mining. This people mine with cyanide and mercury which is poisonous and harmful to our water bodies”, he concluded.
