The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, over an alleged assault on staff of the ministry by persons believed to be police officers.
The incident is said to have occurred while the staff were commuting to work in an official ministry bus. A video sighted by shows some men attacking the occupants of the bus.
Following the incident, there were claims that the assault was triggered after the staff allegedly insulted the officers when confronted over reckless driving.
However, the ministry has rejected that justification, describing it as unacceptable and indefensible.
In a statement shared on social media on Friday, January 16, the ministry’s spokesperson, Lawyer Richmond Rockson, said the minister has demanded a full and impartial investigation into the incident.
“The Minister for Energy and Green Transition Hon. Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to demand a full and impartial investigation into the brutal attack on staff of the Ministry, which occurred while they were commuting to work in one of the Ministry’s official buses,” the statement said.
The ministry also clarified that the alleged perpetrators were police officers and not National Security operatives, as had been speculated in some quarters.
According to the statement, the claim that the staff insulted the officers does not justify the use of force.
“The alleged justification for this assault, that staff of the Ministry ‘insulted’ the officers for reckless driving, is wholly indefensible and cannot, under any circumstances, warrant violence or abuse of power,” it stressed.
The Minister is urging the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the service.
