Enemas during pregnancy: A no-go – Health Expert

Enemas during pregnancy: A no-go – Health Expert
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A health expert has cautioned pregnant women against using enemas, citing potential risks to the unborn baby. Samatu Osman Banda, a health expert at Tema Urban Hospital, warned that enemas can stimulate the uterus, potentially leading to premature labour or other complications.

In an interview with Nana Asabea on Plan B FM’s social and lifestyle programme “Nyansapɔ Fie”, Ms Banda advised pregnant women to avoid using enemas altogether.

“Pregnant women should steer clear of enemas,” Ms Banda said. “Instead, they should focus on maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle to prevent constipation and other digestive issues.”

Also on the programme, Stella Quansah, a maternal health specialist, discussed other danger signs in pregnancy. According to Ms Quansah, it is normal for pregnant women to experience some vaginal discharge, but it should be odourless.

“If the discharge has a strong, unpleasant smell, it could be a sign of an infection,” Ms Quansah explained. “In such cases, the woman should seek medical attention forthwith.”

Ms Quansah also emphasised that any unusual or excessive bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or sudden severe headaches should be reported to a healthcare provider promptly.

These warnings come as part of a broader effort to promote safe and healthy practices during pregnancy.
