The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) Commission says it records with concern that Nigerian protests calling for police reform, in particular the abolition of the Nigerian Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The ECOWAS Commission in a statement sighted by Plan B FM, expressed its condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives amid protests and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
It continued that, “while the ECOWAS Commission identifies the right of citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and protests, it also wishes to stress that those rights should be exercised in a non-violent manner.”
The Commission also called on all protesters to remain peaceful in the conduct of their demonstrations and also implored Nigerian security operatives to be professional in the handling of the #EndSars morchas.
The statement concludes with the ECOWAS commission calling on Nigerian authorities to speed up investigations regarding police brutalities and in addition, the Nigerian youth and the civil society to pursue dialogue to ensure resolution of the issue and restoration of law and order.
