A Nutrition Officer at the Tema Metro Health Directorate, Samuel Atuahene Antwi has urged parents to reinforce the efforts made by teachers and school authorities to ensure their children eat healthily.
According to Dr. Antwi, Kids who have access to healthy foods at home will have an easier time developing good eating habits that they carry to school and other areas of their lives.
Speaking to Akua Konadu Akontie on Plan B FM’s health show dubbed ‘Apomuden Fie’, Dr. Atuahene said parents need to train their kids when it comes to proper diet and nutrition to ensure proper growth and development to stay healthy.
“Parents must serve balanced meals with a combination of fiber, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins (such as legumes, fish), healthy fats (like those found in nuts and vegetable oils), for their children to help prevent stunted growth. Healthy snacks (such as fresh fruit, veggies and dip, yogurt, should be taken at school in case they get hungry between meals,” He said
“It will be good for parents to collaborate with school authorities to ensure food vendors who ply their trade on school campuses have met all safety requirements before they are allowed to operate.
“Good practices like washing of hands before eating and making sure the kids drink clean water should be encouraged so they live a healthy life”
“One thing as a parent you should be more concerned is to review the meal and snack options available at their school. If students have access to unhealthy items, such as sugary foods and drinks, greasy or salty foods, and processed foods, they may be tempted to choose these options instead of healthier alternatives,” He added
“I will also advocate for the replacement of junk foods with natural fruit snacks. The schools should initiate a breakfast program whereby they serve healthy breakfast meals to educate and also encourage kids about the importance of this meal”
“Another important thing parents should take note is to avoid keeping junk foods at home such as candy, sugary drinks, sweet baked goods, and salty or greasy snacks. Kids’ dietary needs change as they get older”
In conclusion, Nutritionist Atuahene said Iron and folic acid is essential for children, which helps in supporting healthy brain growth and prevent stunted growth among them.
