The Supreme Court, presiding over the Election Petition put before it by former President John Dramani Mahama has adjourned hearing of the case to Wednesday, January 20, 2020 at 9am.
The hearing follows John Dramani Mahama’s petition to the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of the 2020 general elections. According to the former president, the Electoral Commission was wrong to declare President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo winner of the presidential election. He has therefore challenged the declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC) insisting President Akufo-Addo did poll more votes to earn a second term in office.
The EC after the 2020 election, declared that former president Mahama polled 6,214,889, representing 47.36 percent, whilst Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo polled 6,730,413 votes representing 51.59 percent of valid votes cast
During the court proceedings today, Tuesday, January 19, 2020, the NDC filed for the motion asking that the EC Chair admits errors in the election results. Former President Mahama through his lawyers had asked for permission to elicit answers to some 12 interrogatories from the EC Chair, Jean Mensah.
The petitioner among other requested wanted the EC Chair to answer if the National Communication Authority (NCA) played any role or facilitated in any way, the transmission of the election results to its headquarters. The former President’s lawyers also wanted to know how the Chairperson of the EC arrived at the figures she used in declaring candidate Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election.
The petitioner’s lead Counsel, Tsatsu Tsikata pointed out that the interrogatories were as critical as it would help the Supreme Court determine the genuineness of the results that saw the NPP presidential candidate, emerging as the winner of the 2020 polls.
The court presided over by Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, ruled against Mahama’s request after they went on a recess. The case which is being aired on some television stations is expected to resume tomorrow, Wednesday, January 20, 2020.
