Election 2024: The inevitable will happen if NPP attempts to steal the will of the people – Gbande

Election 2024: The inevitable will happen if NPP attempts to steal the will of the people – Gbande

Mr Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a strong warning to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) against any alleged attempts to influence the outcome of the upcoming December 7 general elections.

Mr Gbande cautioned that the NDC would not tolerate a repeat of what he described as the NPP’s alleged misconduct during the 2020 elections.

Mr Gbande expressed confidence that the NDC would be vigilant this election season, prepared to protect the will of the people at all costs.

He asserted that if any attempts are made to subvert the electoral process through force, the NDC would respond “squarely.”

While emphasizing that the NDC does not intend to disrupt the peace and security the country enjoys, Mr Gbande noted that the party has no plans to rely solely on the Electoral Commission, claiming the commission had failed to prove itself as impartial in past elections.

Mr Gbande added that the NDC, led by former President John Dramani Mahama, is committed to peaceful elections and has no desire to see violence or instability in Ghana.

He underscored that the NDC’s approach is based on ensuring “justice and fairness” in the electoral process, stating that “one-man-one-vote” is the party’s guiding principle.

Mr Gbande also dismissed the need for the use of the military in the election process, warning that any attempts to use security forces to influence the vote would have serious consequences.

He clarified that, unlike in 2020, the NDC would not rely on the courts but would instead ensure that all votes are accurately counted and verified at the polling stations. in the absence of this, he warned the inevitable will.

His comments follow the NDC’s recent decision to decline to sign a peace accord facilitated by the National Peace Council stating that justice has not been delivered for the innocent people who were slain in the 2020 elections.

He spoke in an interview with Accra-based Kessben FM.
