Felix Kwasi Annan, a communicator for the Movement for Change, has expressed concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) approach to selecting media houses to cover the upcoming elections at coalition centers. Speaking to Obidehye Kofi Sakyi during the morning show(Nkosuo Nsem) on Plan B 104.5 FM, he highlighted potential issues of fairness and transparency surrounding the EC’s decisions.
Annan argued that allowing the EC to handpick specific media outlets could disadvantage the public, especially in areas where only one radio station is accessible. He noted that Ghana has numerous radio stations affiliated with political parties, raising concerns about potential bias if party-owned stations dominate the coverage.
“How can people in remote areas, where they rely on a single radio station for information, know what is happening at the coalition centers if their station isn’t selected?” Annan questioned. He also stressed that many Ghanaians have built trust in specific radio stations, and excluding such outlets from election coverage could undermine confidence in the electoral process.
Annan urged the EC to carefully reconsider its approach, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and fairness. “The Electoral Commission should be very careful about their decisions,” he advised, warning that selective media coverage could harm public trust and transparency in the elections.
The call for a more inclusive and balanced media representation underscores the critical role of the press in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
