Election 2020: Voting Hitch Regarding Mahama’s Security Officer Rectified

The Security guard of John Mahama who registered in the same polling station with the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had his name missing from the register rendering him unable to cast his ballot.

Mr. Mahama, reacting to the incident told journalists that these were some of the issues the NDC raised against the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the polls but nothing was done about it.

He said, “One of my security guards; I registered here with him and during the exhibition, we checked his name.”

“We got here today and his name is not there and so I don’t know if it is a generalized problem but it is too early to make an assessment. We are waiting to find out what the presiding officer will say”, he continued.

“We hope that they can rectify this. These are some of the little things that we kept complaining about,” Mr. Mahama appealed.

Shortly after, the NDC flagbearer who appeared impressed, announced via his official twitter handle that his security officer had been able to vote following resolution of the issue by the Presiding Officer at the Bole District Assembly Polling Station.

The EC following up to the same issue released a statement indicating no wrongdoing on its part but that of the bodyguard – Mr Tahiru Bombi Bakari – who arrived at the polling station without his Voter ID and went ahead to produce his name in a sequence other than what is captured in the Voters Register.

“The bodyguard, Mr. Tahiru Bombi Bakari, voted at the District at the District Office Polling Station in Bole-Bamboi Constituency. This was after the Name Reference List Officer was able to trace his name in the Voters Register following several attempts due to Mr. Tahiru not having his Voters ID card on him and providing his name in a different sequence from that on the Register.”
