Effutu Parliamentary Election: 2 candidates petition court to annul results

Effutu Parliamentary Election: 2 candidates petition court to annul results
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The NDC parliamentary candidate for the Effutu Constituency, James Kofi Annan and independent candidate, Louisa Buabeng have petitioned the Winneba High Court to annul the 2024 parliamentary election results.

They have cited irregularities and bias on the part of the Electoral Commision.

The first petitioner, James Kofi Annan is praying the court to annul results from some 96 polling stations claiming that the signatories on the pink sheets are not those of his officially assigned polling agents.

The second petitioner, Louisa Buabeng, on the other hand wants the entire results of the parliamentary election annulled because the Electoral Commission denied her crucial information about the election and also fielding polling agents.

Counsel for the petitioners, Jennifred Maurice Adjei following Monday’s court proceedings told 3News.Com that the case of the first petitioner is characterised by some in anomalies that were recorded on the day of elections.

Some anomalies have also been detected on some of the pink sheets.

According to the counsel, “some people who were not supposed to have even signed did so for his [first petitioner, James Kofi Annan] polling agents.”

He says that anomaly was detected on 96 out of the about 150 pink sheets, suggesting that the actual results of the elections might have been altered.

On the second petitioner, the counsel said she is “seeking to annul the entire results because we believe that the rules of natural justice have been breached”.

He said “the Electoral Commission ignored totally the third candidate, which is Louisa Buabeng” by denying her the “opportunity to present polling agents” as well as “access to the voters register and other prudent information”.

In her case, the lawyer holds that some unknown polling agents signed on her behalf on about thirty pink sheets even though she did not officially assign polling agents.

Apart from that, the petitioners want the court to make a declaration that would compel the Electoral Commission to furnish all candidates of elections with any needful information and grant equal opportunities to them in the future.

The election was won by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
