The death of a parent during childhood can influence a person’s future marriage and relationships in both positive and negative ways, Rev. Maxwell has observed.
He made the observation while discussing the impact of early parental loss on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua. The guest, Rev. Maxwell explained that a child’s experience after losing a parent largely depends on who takes care of them, the upbringing they receive and their age at the time of the loss.
He identified adolescence as a particularly sensitive stage, noting that the experience can shape a child’s development and future relationships in different ways.
He noted that some children who grow up in violent or disrespectful homes may carry those behaviours into their adult relationships. According to him, losing a parent does not always lead to negative outcomes, as some children may learn to become independent and seek employment earlier in life. However, the absence of parental love can also leave others emotionally vulnerable.
Rev. Maxwell further cautioned that some people may enter relationships seeking to replace the parent they lost, which can lead to unrealistic expectations and feelings of entitlement toward their partners. He advised people seeking new partners after losing a spouse to look for someone who demonstrates empathy and understanding rather than making decisions based solely on emotions.
He emphasized that the support and guidance children receive after losing a parent are important in shaping their future relationships. He urged families and caregivers to provide proper care and emotional support to help affected children develop healthy attitudes toward love, respect and relationships.
