‘Dumsor’: A 24-Hour Economy Cannot Function In The Dark – Bawumia Mocks President Mahama

Bawumia condemns mass dismissals, urges govt to protect all Ghanaians

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has come under fire from Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for its much-discussed 24-hour economy idea, which he claims is an unrealistic plan that has been weakened by the nation’s worsening power situation.

He said this during a post-election “Thank You” tour of the United Kingdom, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer made fun of the proposal when meeting with Young Executive Forum (YEF) members in London. The viability of maintaining an all-day economy without dependable energy was the focus of his remarks.

“They told us they will bring in a 24-hour economy. This is their flagship promise, their flagship policy, 24-hour economy,” he said. “Of course, we all knew it was a joke…Today, it’s completely missing from their policy. They are not even talking about it. It didn’t appear in their budget.”

Taking a direct jab at the NDC’s current handling of the electricity situation, he added, “How can you have a 24-hour economy with dumsor at the same time? I mean, you can’t.”

Dr. Bawumia said that the country has been pulled back into power instability by the NDC, claiming that the continuous outages confirm the NPP’s earlier warnings.

“Dumsor has taken over, and we warned Ghanaians that dumsor and NDC work together, and that was going to happen.

“Ghanaians didn’t listen, but we basically have been proven right,” he stated. “Dumsor is pretty bad, and it’s likely to get worse from what we can see.”

Supported by NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, the 24-hour economy concept suggests a national framework that encourages ongoing productivity in industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and retail.

In order to increase employment, optimize resource use, and promote economic growth, the plan aims to incentivize enterprises to operate in shifts.
