John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon, has criticized the Ghana Police Service for their handling of two separate incidents involving public disorder as reported by Ghana Web on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
Dumelo questioned why police arrested demonstrators from the Democracy Hub but failed to arrest supporters of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, who also disrupted public order.
The incident in question occurred on October 4, 2024, when the Chief Imam’s supporters clashed with police while leading a convoy in Accra. Following Friday prayers, the convoy encountered a police barricade at Kawukudi Junction.
The youth, reportedly impatient with the delay, broke through the barricade, creating a path for the convoy to pass. Despite this disruption, no arrests were made.
This confrontation happened near a protest against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, organized by the Democracy Hub. According to eyewitnesses, the protesters were not directly involved in the clash.
Nevertheless, Dumelo found it concerning that the police did not take any action against the Chief Imam’s supporters.
However, Dumelo highlighted the treatment of Democracy Hub protesters, many of whom were arrested on September 21, 2024, after breaking a police barricade near the 37 Roundabout during their demonstration.
“So democracy hub protested, and some people were arrested after the police alleged they broke public order, but they couldn’t arrest anyone when supporters of the Chief Imam broke public order. They watched as they destroyed the barricades,” Dumelo wrote on X.
