Selorm Avedetsi, NDC Communicator for Ningo Prampram, has cautioned against the passage of a proposed dual citizenship bill, arguing that it could weaken national accountability and electoral integrity in Ghana.
Speaking on Nkosusem, a morning programme on Plan B FM, Mr. Avedetsi warned that allowing dual citizens to occupy sensitive public positions could create enforcement challenges, particularly in cases involving allegations of corruption or misconduct.
He referenced the controversy surrounding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, arguing that legal accountability becomes more complicated when public officials have strong ties or citizenship links outside Ghana.
According to him, the proposed bill could open the door for individuals residing abroad to return during election periods, use financial influence to secure political office, and later relocate outside the country while still benefiting from Ghana’s public system.
Mr. Avedetsi maintained that public office holders must have undivided allegiance to Ghana, insisting that the country should not pass legislation that could compromise sovereignty or weaken enforcement of its laws.
He concluded that the dual citizenship proposal should be reconsidered to safeguard national interest and protect the integrity of Ghana’s political system.
