Agness Teiko Nyemi-Tei, Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Association and Todah Connect Foundation, has shared her inspiring perspective on children with Down syndrome, urging parents to see them as blessings.
In an interview with Adomba Kwabena Ewusi, Nyemi-Tei emphasised the importance of accepting and loving children with Down syndrome, highlighting that they are human beings deserving of love, care, and acceptance.
Down syndrome occurs when a child is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21, resulting in intellectual and physical disabilities. While children with Down syndrome may share similar characteristics, such as slanted eyes and short stature, Nyemi-Tei stressed that they are gifts from God, not burdens.
Sharing her personal story, Nyemi-Tei revealed that she initially felt sad and disturbed after giving birth to her child with Down syndrome. However, over time, she came to accept and love her child unconditionally. Nyemi-Tei urged parents and caregivers to pay special attention to children with Down syndrome, emphasising their worth and deserving of love and care.
Stephen Ocansey, a volunteer with the association and father to a child with Down syndrome, echoed Nyemi-Tei’s sentiments, sharing his transformative journey from worry to gratitude. “Before, I had no job despite being a graduate
” he said. “Today, I live in my own house and run my own business. I know it is through my child that I am enjoying these blessings.”
The Down Syndrome Association, which was formerly known as Todah Connect Foundation, founded by Nyemi-Tei, advocates for Down syndrome patients and mothers, providing support, training, and essential items to facilities.
