Discrimination: A recipe for hatred in the workplace and society – Public advised

Discrimination: A recipe for hatred in the workplace and society – Public advised

Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation.

Speaking on Plan B Fm’s family, relationship, and lifestyle show dubbed NYANSAPO FIE, hosted by Dr. Michael Asenso, on the topic ” DISCRIMINATION”.

Lady Marilyn Abeka Daniels said direct discrimination happens when a person, or a group of people, is treated less favorably than another person or group because of their background or certain personal characteristics.
It means discriminating against someone because of a ‘perceived’ protected characteristic. For example, thinking someone is a certain age and discriminating against them because of it when they’re not.

She continues that indirect discrimination may be a minimum height requirement for a job where height is not relevant to carry out the role. Such a requirement would likely discriminate disproportionately against women (and some minority ethnic groups) as they are generally shorter than men.

Indirect discrimination is when a working practice, policy, or rule is the same for everyone but has a worse effect on someone because of a ‘protected characteristic’.

Rev. Roger Carl Parkins also explained that Victimization discrimination is when someone treats you badly or subjects you to a detriment because you complain about discrimination or help someone who has been the victim of discrimination.

An employer gives a warning to someone for being a witness to a complaint of racial discrimination made by a work colleague. dismissal from employment or being refused further contract work after making a complaint of sexual harassment.

He added that Discrimination can be expressed through “harassment,” when a boss, supervisor, or co-worker says or does something that creates an intimidating, hostile, or threatening work environment. Harassment is illegal if it is based on a personal characteristic or status.

He stressed that, When an employee is discriminated against, they may often feel helpless and anxiety-ridden, and may display a lack of interest in fulfilling job responsibilities.

An employee who feels like an outsider because of his religious beliefs or nationality could lose self-esteem and stop contributing ideas.
