DExt Technology, in partnership with IVL foundation, has held the fifth edition of its annual STEM Durbar and Exhibition in the Tema Municipality, aimed at nurturing creativity, innovation, and practical problem-solving skills among schoolchildren. The event brought students from various basic schools together to showcase inventions inspired by science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts.

As part of the initiative, participating schools received science and mathematics kits to help establish functional STEM clubs on their campuses. These clubs serve as innovation hubs where students collaborate, experiment, and develop solutions to everyday challenges.

A key highlight of this year’s durbar was a live innovation challenge, where contestants were tasked with designing and building prototypes on stage. Students presented projects including a working vacuum cleaner, a mini hydroelectric power system, a biogas production unit, a standing fan, and a water purification device capable of removing plastic particles and mosquito larvae from contaminated water.
Speaking at the event, Mr. James Tamakloe, a teacher and STEM club facilitator, appealed to government and private stakeholders to invest in such initiatives to sustain students’ interest in practical sciences.
“This program is helping our students to think beyond the ordinary and transform theoretical knowledge into real-life solutions,” he said. “With greater support, many of these ideas can be developed into impactful innovations.”
Schools that participated in the exhibition included Bastona Primary School, Aggrey Road 2 Primary and JHS, Mante-Din Drive Basic School, Holy Child Basic School, St. Albans Anglican Basic School, Padmore Street Primary School, St. Paul Methodist JHS, and Twedease Primary School.
The DExt Technology STEM initiative continues to play a significant role in promoting hands-on learning and fostering the next generation of inventors and problem solvers in Ghana. Stakeholders are hopeful that increased support will enable the initiative to expand to more schools across the country.
