Devtraco District Fire Command Records Increased Fire Outbreak in 2020

Devtraco District recorded 42 fire outbreaks from January – 25 November this year, recording an increased number of cases reported during the period under review.

Mr. Philemon Buabeng, District Officer 2 (D.O. 2) of the Devtraco District Fire Command, Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) who released these numbers on the Plan B FM breakfast show – Nkosuo Nsem – said, the 42 fire outbreaks consist of bush fires and accident scenes.

“From January 2020 till date, the district has recorded 28 fire scenes, 8 accident and 6 bush fires making 42 in total”, He said.

Mr. Buabeng said the major causes of domestic and commercial fire outbreaks in the area could be attributed to electrical faults and naked lights, such as candles and gas fires left unattended.

He admonished residents in the district to desist from storing inflammable liquids in their homes and to ensure that lit candles were placed in metal pans with water underneath them.

Residents he added should employ competent electricians to install electrical cables and prevent children from playing with matches and naked lights.

D.O. 2 Buabeng indicated that as efforts to reduce the fire canker in the country, the Service would intensify its education of the public to ensure they follow the necessary safety protocols.

He said the GNFS would sustain collaborations with key stakeholders in the discharge of their duties.

Pointing to challenges of the Service he identified accessibility into markets during fire outbreaks as a major drawback stating that, kiosks, shops and other structures mounted at entrances make it difficult for fire personnel to gain entry to structures in the event of an emergency.
