Security Analyst, Lord Nana Appiah has called on the Leadership of the Ghana police service and the security agencies to institute rigorous measures to ensure that personnel within their command do not sell or rent arms to civilians and robbers.
His call follows the spate of killings coupled with the rise in armed robbery cases in the country which has created a cloud of insecurity.
The recent one being a 22-year-old woman who lost her life at Nima after she was hit by a bullet from a weapon during a Muslim wedding reception last Sunday morning.
“I think all of us should be worried because for even one weapon like the AK-47, we all know how many people it can destroy in seconds. Records show that there are about 2,3 million unlicensed arms in circulation in the country. Therefore, if we have over 2 million arms and we don’t know where they are or who owns them, of course, it is worrying. It means that the system of controlling police stockpile is not stringent enough and the IGP and the Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission should ensure that more stringent measures are taken in the control of illegal weapons in the country” he said on Plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ with Ohene Addo.
He aslo indicated that, the inability of the Police to deal effectively with crime in the country is down to interference in their work from politicians and opinion leaders. He thus call on them to desist from such acts and allow them to discharge their duties professionally.
“If we really want the Police to work, let us allow them to work. The interferences are too much. There are good men and women in the service but sometimes when they see bad things happening they are unable to talk because of political interference.” He added.
