A 30-year-old scrap dealer, Yakubu Zakari, has been sentenced to three months in prison by the Kwadaso Circuit Court for stealing metals at Bomso in Kumasi.
Zakari, who resides at Aboabo, pleaded not guilty to the charge but was found guilty after a full trial presided over by Mr Jephthah Appau.
Presenting the facts of the case, Police Chief Inspector David Opoku Kwabi told the court that the complainant, Obeng Abayie, a trader living at Bomso, spotted the convict around 2:20 p.m. on January 13, 2025, carrying a sack containing four metal bracings in front of his shop.
Suspicious that the items might be his, Mr Abayie quickly returned home to verify and discovered that the door to his garage had been broken, with four metal bracings missing.
He immediately pursued Zakari and caught up with him at Bomso Top High, where the convict was loading the stolen items into a tricycle. Mr Abayie raised an alarm, attracting nearby police officers, who swiftly intervened and arrested the suspect.
A subsequent search at the Bomso Police Charge Office led to the discovery of several other items in Zakari’s possession, including a frying pan, a cutlass, four metal bracings, a pinch bar, a hammer, parts of a standing fan, and four iron rods, all valued at an amount yet to be determined.
During interrogation, Zakari denied the allegations, claiming he had purchased the items from two unidentified young men at Bomso. However, he failed to provide proof of purchase or assist the police in tracing the supposed sellers.
After thorough investigations, the police charged him with stealing, and the court, after examining the evidence, convicted and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.
