Conflict brews in Okuapeman as rival claims Paramount Chief title; MUSEC convenes meeting

Conflict brews in Okuapeman as rival claims Paramount Chief title; MUSEC convenes meeting
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There is growing tension in Akropong-Akuapem, Ghana, following an attempt by a rival chief, Odehye Kwasi Akuffo, to assert himself as the Paramount Chief of Okuapehene, despite the existing Okuapehene Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo III.

The situation escalated when Odehye Kwasi Akuffo attended a funeral dressed in traditional regalia and was paraded as Okuapehene. His followers recited appellations suggesting his legitimacy as the chief.

This action has led to anger and threats of violence from some youth in the area. Okuapehene Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, who was legitimately gazetted in 2022, has expressed his displeasure and referred the matter to appropriate institutions for action.

The Akuapem North Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the situation, and the police are monitoring to ensure law and order is maintained.

The situation stems from a dispute over the nomination and enstoolment process of the Okuapehene. After the demise of the previous Okuapehene in 2015, a dispute arose between the Queenmother and other parties regarding the rightful nominee for the Okuapehene position. The issue went through various legal and traditional processes, with Oseadeyo Kwasi Akuffo III eventually being enstooled as the Okuapehene.

The recent attempt by Odehye Kwasi Akuffo to assert himself as Okuapehene has reignited tensions in the area and raised concerns about stability and traditional leadership disputes.

The situation underscores the importance of traditional leadership and succession processes in Ghanaian communities and the potential for conflicts when such processes are not followed or respected.
