Completion of Odawna Market scheduled for end of July, despite challenges

Completion of Odawna Market scheduled for end of July, despite challenges

The Ministry for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development has announced plans to complete and commission the Odawna Market in the Korley Klottey municipality by the end of July.

Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, disclosed this timeline during a recent inspection tour of the market. The ongoing construction includes a two-storey school building and a 40-seater toilet facility to enhance the trading centre.

Despite acknowledging significant progress, Minister Mensah Korsah highlighted challenges affecting the project’s completion. These challenges include individual encroachment, with one building constructed within the market premises, and resistance from some business operators to install market perimeter walls.

Minister Mensah Korsah, concerned about safety risks posed by inadequate fencing, stressed the urgency of addressing these issues to ensure public safety.

“We’ve observed that some areas still require finishing touches, particularly the perimeter walls, which are either non-existent or weak in some sections. This poses a danger as the market area gets crowded,” the Minister expressed.

The project, which has spanned approximately eight years, aims for a handover by the end of July. Minister Mensah Korsah assured stakeholders that efforts were underway to resolve outstanding issues and ensure the timely completion and functionality of the Odawna Market.

Local authorities have been briefed on the project’s status, and collaborative efforts are ongoing to meet the upcoming commissioning deadline.
