Cocoa has been the backbone of Ghana since independence — Richard Aning

Police arrest three people in connection with alleged smuggling of cocoa beans

A Communication Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Tema Central Constituency, Richard Aning, has stated that cocoa has been the backbone of Ghana’s economy since independence, expressing concern about the current challenges facing cocoa farmers.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen, Mr. Aning said any politician who claims that the current difficulties in the cocoa sector have no impact on the nation does not have Ghana’s interests at heart.

He stressed the need for long-term policy direction rather than short-term or campaign-driven policies and agendas.

Mr. Aning also weighed into the ongoing cocoa debate, stating that the President should have reshuffled the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Randy Abbey, from his position.

“They must come clear and tell us that the government was not able to sell the cocoa beans at the right time on the world market,” he said.

He advocated for what he described as a “Ghana First” agenda to move the nation forward.

Citing the provision of free water and electricity during the COVID-19 period, he argued that although the initiative supported citizens at the time, Ghanaians eventually bore the cost through the COVID levy.
